DOES GOD CARE ABOUT ELECTIONS?

Dear Brethren:

This is a question that has perplexed Christians for centuries. Some theologians (deceived and deceiving, I believe) argue that Believers should not pollute themselves by being involved with secular matters like politics. As we look at today's landscape (for example, rampant state-sanctioned abortion and homosexual “marriage”) we see what we have reaped because of the silence of the Church and her pastors, priests and leading spokesmen and educators.

However, this question was resolved in 1646 by the Westminster Confession:

“God, the supreme Lord and King of all the world, hath ordained civil magistrates, to be, under Him, over the people, for His own glory, and the public good; and, to this end, hath armed them with the power of the sword, for the defense and encouragement of them that are good, and for the punishment of evil doers…”

More significant is the proclamation in Isaiah 9:6-7 that GOVERNMENT will be upon Jesus' shoulder; that He will be “Prince of Peace”; that His Government will “increase” and bring with it “peace” and “justice”.

It is clear throughout Scripture that God cares about nations and their GOVERNMENTS. He is opposed to anarchy and disordered societies (see, for example, Jdg 21:25; 2 Sam 8:15-18; Est 10:3; Ps 2; 9:17; Pr 14:34; Mk 3:24; Rom 13:1-7; 1 Tim 2:1-4; 1 Pet 2:13-17).

Since our nation uses ELECTIONS to choose those who will administer our governments (local, state and national), the logical question is - “Does God Care About Whom We Elect?”

The Biblical answer is a resounding “YES!” Consider the following: Jdg 3:15; Ps 75:6-7; Pr 8:15; Dan 2:21; Mk 10:42; Lk 1:52.

One may ask, “Why Does He Care?” Again consider the following:

1. God Cares about JUDGES & JUSTICE (Ps 89:14a; Is 61:8; Ezek 45:9; Mic 6:8);
2. God Cares about PEACE in our communities (1 Tim 2:2);
3. God Wants Biblically JUST LAWS (Is 10:1);
4. God Hates MURDER, including Abortion (Ex 20:13; Lev 18:21; 20:2-3; Ps 94:21);
5. God Wants Us to Care for the POOR, SICK, DISABLED (Mt 25: 35-36);
6. God is Concerned about TAXES (1 Sam 8:11-22; Mt 17:25-27; 22:15-22; Lk 3:12-13);
7. God Hates IDOLATRY, like Islam (Ex 20:4-5; 23:13b);
8. God Dislikes TYRANTS (Pr 28:3, 12; Ecc 4:1; Is 58:6; Mk 10:42);
9. God Wants MORALITY to Flourish (2 Sam 12:1-4; Jer 3:2; Rom 13:14; 1 Cor 15:33; Rev 14:4);
10. God Cares about BORDERS (Ps 74:17; 104:9; Ecc 10:8; Hos 5:10; Acts 17:26);
11. God Wants Us to be PROTECTED (Jdg 3:15; 1 Sam 17: 2 Chr 20:1-30).

These are only a few of the many governmental issues about which God vehemently cares. Therefore, He wants magistrates elected to office who will establish righteous and just laws so His people can live peaceful, productive and Godly lives.

One might ask, “Why do we seem to elect people so far short of this goal?” The answer is unfortunate, but simple - we, the electorate, are sinful people who are often blind, deceived idolaters with wicked hearts (Jer 17:9), Therefore, we elect people who promise to give us what we want, our own lusts (Jer 8:14; Rom 7:5).

Yet, Beloved, we should be different! The Holy Spirit has given us eyes to see, ears to hear and hearts which yearn for righteous rulers. ELECTIONS DO MATTER!

So, please PRAY and ACT during this Election period;

1. PRAY and ACT so that God's candidates will win and that those who oppose His Laws and Purposes will lose (Ps 75:7);
2. PRAY that Christians will AWAKE, DISCERN and MAKE a difference (Jdg 5:23).
