Time to Mourn, Time to Rededicate Our Lives

To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die ÷ a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance÷ a time to keep silent, and a time to speak (Ecc 3:1-8).

America celebrated Independence Day 2000, with greater extravagance, more spectacular fireworks and more amazing special effects than any 4th of July in recent memory. There were speeches and patriotic songs and trendy pseudo-patriotic music. During the annual Boston Pops Orchestra performance, revelers swayed to Don McLean's "American Pie," a sixties ballad with an upbeat sound but strange lyrics bemoaning "the day the music died" and extolling rock music, the devil and the demise of American culture.

But the hopeless lyrics of thousands of songs penned during the past 40 years -- many far worse than McLean's ballad -- do not begin to match the confusion that issued from the U.S. Supreme Court last week. Americans should have spent this Independence Day repenting, weeping and bewailing wicked decisions that repudiate everything our Founding Fathers wrote in the Declaration of Independence and that spell the end of genuine liberty in America.

  • D&X Abortion - The "right" to murder unborn babies within the womb, and now outside the womb (but for their heads), is now the law of the land. The Supreme Court's ruling in Stenberg v. Carhart effectively struck down partial birth abortion (D&X) bans in 30 states. Amazingly, Sandra Day O'Connor cast the swing vote in the 5-4 ruling, saying that the Nebraska law might be used to restrict late term "dilation and evacuation" (D&E) abortions. The D&E procedure is just as grizzly. Instead of delivering a live, kicking baby through the vaginal canal (all but for the head) before killing it, the abortionist utilizing the D&E procedure dismembers the child (sometimes within the womb, sometimes by pulling the limbs out one at a time and cutting them off). The baby bleeds to death, then (as in D&X) his/her brains are sucked out and his/her skull is crushed and removed. The ruling totally ignores the inherent "right to life" etched in the Declaration of Independence, and violates the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, which says, "Nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws."

  • Abortion Clinic Bubble Zones - Christians and other concerned citizens no longer have the right to "sidewalk counsel" a woman entering an abortion clinic in an effort to dissuade her from killing her baby. In Hill v. Colorado the Court ruled in favor of a Colorado law imposing an artificial 8 foot buffer zone around all persons entering abortion clinics and disallowing the offering of tracts and literature unless requested by the abortion seeker. This is a clear repudiation of the 1st Amendment, which allows "no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech÷"

  • Student Led Prayer - The Court ruled in Santa Fe Independent School District v. Doe, that voluntary, public, student-led prayer may no longer be allowed at public school sporting events.

  • Forced Anti-Religious Subsidies - Publicly supported colleges and universities may continue to require students to pay fees to support student groups that violate their own ideological or religious beliefs (University of Wisconsin v. Southworth).

  • Unwanted Pornography - The Court ruled that cable TV operators cannot be required to block out pornographic channels so that cable customers (and their children) who have not subscribed to the channels still have their unwanted, poorly scrambled signals piped into their homes (U.S. v. Playboy Entertainment Group).

It is ironic that these "free speech" decisions upheld wicked speech and pornography and forced subsidies for wicked groups, while prayer and life-saving counseling were declared unconstitutional! Will the Church go on with "business as usual," look away, and accept this godless tyranny? The next president will appoint up to four new Supreme Court justices. Born again Christians, the largest demographic voting group will determine, by their prayers and votes, whether this moral insanity, and thus, God's judgment, continues.

Lord, Teach Us to Pray!

God, HOW LONG will Your Church allow the wicked to prevail? Lord, DEAL with the Justices who so DEFIED You and Your Laws. AWAKEN Your Church to REPENT, PRAY & WORK to elect godly leaders & defeat ungodly leaders (Ex 16:28; Nu 14:11, 27; Josh 18:3; 1 Sam 16:1; 1 Kg 18:21; Ps 54:2-3; 74:9-12; 80:4-7; 94:3-10).
