CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM
Is the McCain-Feingold Bill Biblical, Constitutional?
The Campaign Finance Reform Bill sought by Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Russ Feingold (D-W) will be debated and amended in the Senate for the next two weeks. It has some positive elements, but Christian groups oppose measures that: 1) ban corporate & restrict individual contributions to political parties; 2) ban corporate contributions for TV & radio campaign issue ads aired within 60 days of an election; and 3) expand reporting requirements & contribution restrictions for all groups that support or oppose candidates. There are viable alternatives (see http://www.washtimes.com/national/default-2001320233128.htm).
McCain-Feingold would bring the entire national political process under extreme scrutiny, regulation and control by the Federal Election Commission (FEC). The FEC would micro-regulate every group that speaks out on issues & candidates for federal office, oversee their contributions, and in various ways, control the content of their speech. The FEC would become, in effect, the political Gestapo. Christian groups, third party newcomers and other "little guys" severely would be discouraged and fettered from participating in national politics. The mainstream media, with near exclusive power over the airwaves, would have even greater influence in national elections.
THE BILL IS NOT BIBLICAL
Under present laws, one church has had its tax-exempt status revoked for running a newspaper ad that criticized Bill Clinton. Another Christian group was sued by the FEC for $1 million dollars for running a similar ad. The McCain-Feingold measure will expand such restrictions. It will hinder publication of Christian voter guides. Groups that publicly analyze candidates and issues will be required to register and report to the FEC as political organizations. Contributions to such groups will be limited. Yet God's prophetic people must be prepared to obey when God says, "Speak," regardless of the consequences (Acts 5:28-29). Could this be happening in America?
THE BILL IS NOT CONSTITUTIONAL
The First Amendment says: "Congress shall make no law... prohibiting the free exercise [of religion]; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press." The McCain-Feingold bill, on its face and in its particulars, is a flagrant attempt to eradicate the First Amendment. Any senator who votes for it will have violated his oath to uphold the U.S. Constitution.

--Heavenly Father, Awaken the Church to the dangers of the McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Bill. CAUSE the Senate to OPPOSE the measure & to SUPPORT one that STRENGTHENS and does not restrict the right of individuals and groups to proclaim TRUTH about Political Issues & Candidates. In Jesus' Name. Amen. (Pr 23:23; Acts 4:18-20; 9:29; Gal 5:1; Eph 6:19-20; 2 Th 3:1; 3 Jn 3,4)
