"Let everyone who is Godly pray to you while you may be found" (Psalm 32:6)
Lott & Daschle are Obstructing Enactment
Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-SD), with unexpected assistance from Senate Minority Leader Trent Lott, has all but killed the Sudan Peace Act - simply by ignoring it. The Act was passed in the House last year by a vote of 422-2, and in the Senate, 97-0. Both versions condemn the genocide being perpetrated by the Sudanese government against Christians and other non-Muslims in southern Sudan.
--Over $2 million in daily oil revenues taken in by the Khartoum government have helped facilitate the wholesale murder, gang rape, and enslavement of women and children in Sudan. Over 2 million Christians and animists have been slaughtered there during the past 17 years.
--The Senate and House versions of the bill should have been reconciled and enacted into law by now. Some believe domestic and international business interests, the White House, Senators from both political parties and America's unholy military alliances are all at fault for the inactivity.
--The House Bill (H.R. 2052), thanks to an amendment by Rep. Spencer Bachus (R-AL), would bar international oil companies in Sudan from raising money with American capital markets sending a critically important message to the Sudanese government. The version passed by the Senate (S. 180) lacks such an amendment, but the final Act could retain the Bachus measure when the bills are reconciled in conference committee.
--House conferees were named last year, but Senate Minority Leader Trent Lott (R-AL) has bewildered Christians by twice blocking efforts to name Senate conferees.
--After the September 11th terrorist attacks, the Bush Administration actively pursued Sudan to join the international anti-terror coalition and White House support for the Sudan bill evaporated. Remarkably, Sudan is on the State Department list as one of seven "state sponsors of terrorism."
--Daschle has intentionally stalled Senate action on 50 separate bills already passed by the U.S. House of Representatives. The Sudan Peace Act is among them.
Rep. Dick Army (R-TX) said during the House debate last year, "...people are being tortured, mutilated and killed [in Sudan] solely because of their Christian faith." Black Christians are being taken as slaves by the Islamic government while its helicopters are bombing churches, schools, hospitals and humanitarian agencies. The U.S. cannot turn a blind eye toward a nation that is slaughtering millions of innocent people, much less be their ally, without incurring the wrath of the Holy God of the Bible. Christians must pray for enactment of the Sudan Peace Act.
