Congress Could Improve Upon Bush Plan
TASKMASTER [Hebrew sar mac], "chief of the burden" or "levy" (Ex 1:11); [Hebrew noghes], "distress," "driver," "oppressor," "raiser of taxes," "taskmaster" (Ex 3:7; 5:6,10,13,14): Officials of this class [were] appointed by Pharaoh for the purpose of oppressing the Israelites and subduing their spirits, lest they seek complete independence or organize a rebellion (Ex 1:11). The condition of the Israelites at this time became one of complete vassalage or slavery... (Frank E. Hirsch, International Standard Bible Dictionary)
President Bush has urged Congress not to tamper with his $1.6 trillion "tax relief" plan. Democrats want to stop it, if they can, while Republicans want to improve and expand it.
--Bush's plan cuts the lowest tax bracket from 15% to 10%, and the highest from nearly 40% to 33%. It repeals, gradually, the Estate Tax. Taxpayers who do not itemize will be able to deduct charitable contributions. Yet, House Majority Whip Tom DeLay (R-TX) says Congress will consider additional tax breaks, including a reduction in capital gains taxes.
--Bill Clinton promised a "middle class tax cut," but gave Americans the largest tax increase in history. The IRS became a taskmaster to many American families with both parents working more hours to pay a larger percentage of income for taxes than in any previous generation. If the economy turns down, they will become abject tax slaves.
Economic & tax oppression are among God's promised curses for disobedience (1 Sam 8:11-13).

--Have MERCY, FORGIVE & grant REPENTANCE, beginning with Your people. Though we deserve oppression, may Congress pass the President's plan with improvements. May Your people use greater financial liberty to SERVE YOU. In Jesus' Name. Amen (Ex 3:9-10; Dt 26:7-8; 2 Kg 13:3-5; Ps 12:3-5; 62:9-12; Lk 12:48).
