"Let everyone who is Godly pray to you while you may be found"  (Psalm 32:6)

Leaders Appeal for Repentance, Reconciliation

The Ninevites believed God... declared a fast, and all... from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth. When the news reached the king... [he, too] covered himself with sackcloth... Then he issued a proclamation... "Do not let any man... eat or drink... But... covered with sackcloth... call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways... Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from His fierce anger so that we will not perish." When God saw what they did... He had compassion... (Jonah 3:5-10).

In this, our nation's unparalleled hour of danger, God-fearing National and State leaders have issued urgent calls for prayer and repentance. Each of us should wholeheartedly support these efforts, urge our elected representatives to support them, promote them in our churches and communities and pray that they will succeed in the eyes of God. Our nation's only hope is for God to extend mercy to us, just as He did to wicked Nineveh nearly 2300 years ago.

CONGRESSIONAL PRAYER RESOLUTION - HCR 184, introduced by House Majority Whip Tom DeLay (R-TX), has passed the House and now awaits Senate action. The "Day of Reconciliation" resolution calls for a day to be chosen for regular congressional business to be laid aside and the House Chambers to be used for Senate and House members to "gather to humbly seek the blessings of Providence for forgiveness, reconciliation, unity, and charity for all people of the United States..." No member will be forced to participate, but DeLay believes the majority will, and that those who do will genuinely repent, and seek God on behalf of themselves and our nation.

PRESIDENTIAL PROCLAMATION - Dr. Bill Bright has written 16 national Christian leaders asking them to join him in petitioning President Bush to proclaim the day before Thanksgiving, November 21st, 2001, a "National Day of Reconciliation." Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS) and Rep. Tom DeLay (R-TX) are active supporters of the proposal. According to Dr. Pat Robertson, who received the letter, the proposed proclamation will include wording similar to Abraham Lincoln's 1863 Prayer & Repentance Proclamation.

STATE-LED PRAYER INITIATIVES - State Representative Tony Perkins (R), uncertain whether any national effort would materialize, worked relentlessly to pass a resolution in the Louisiana House of Representatives that recognizes in Louisiana the Day before Thanksgiving as a DAY OF PRAYER, REPENTANCE & RECONCILIATION. Perkins believes the states should take the initiative rather than wait for a national call that could lack the all-important element of REPENTANCE.
